Causes of Swollen Feet in the Elderly

Swollen feet in elderly people can arise from several serious health conditions, including kidney or liver diseases, venous insufficiency, and congestive heart failure. These conditions often disrupt the body's ability to manage fluid balance, leading to swelling in the extremities. When blood flow is compromised due to venous insufficiency, fluid may accumulate in the feet and ankles, causing discomfort and limiting mobility. Reduced mobility can create a dangerous cycle, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. Seniors may find it challenging to navigate their surroundings, furthering possible health issues. Timely identification and management of the underlying causes of swelling are critical. Regular check-ups with a podiatrist can ensure appropriate interventions, ultimately enhancing mobility and minimizing fall risks. If you are a senior or are taking care of one, it is suggested that you consult this type of doctor to schedule regular appointments to monitor foot health.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Stephen Boykins, DPM from SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

What Is a High Ankle Sprain?

A high ankle sprain, medically known as a syndesmotic sprain, occurs when the ligaments connecting the tibia and fibula are stretched or torn, typically from a twisting or rotational injury. This type of sprain is often more severe than traditional ankle sprains and can lead to prolonged recovery times. Common signs include swelling, pain above the ankle, difficulty bearing weight, and tenderness along the outside of the leg. Causes often involve sports activities that require sudden changes in direction or high-impact movements, such as football or basketball. To diagnose a high ankle sprain, a podiatrist will conduct a physical examination, assessing pain levels and range of motion. Imaging tests, such as X-rays or MRI scans may also be used to determine the extent of the injury and rule out fractures. If you have sprained your ankle, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can determine what type of sprain it is, and effectively treat this condition.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Stephen Boykins, DPM from SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Causes of Foot Arch Pain

Pain in the arch of the foot can stem from various conditions that affect its structure and function. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes, resulting from inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Overpronation, which occurs when the foot rolls inward excessively, can lead to strain and discomfort in the arch. Individuals with a cavus foot, or high arch, may also experience pain due to increased pressure on the arch. Conversely, flat feet, where the arches are collapsed, can lead to instability and discomfort. Additionally, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, where the tendon that supports the arch of the foot becomes inflamed or damaged, can weaken the support for the arch, causing pain and difficulty in walking. If you have pain in this part of your foot, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can determine the cause and offer effective treatment solutions.

It's Time for Beautiful Feet

You don't need an excuse to have beautiful nails. Step outside without worrying about the appearance of your feet.

Foot and ankle swelling, or edema, can result from various causes, often indicating underlying health issues. Commonly, swelling occurs due to prolonged standing or sitting, which impedes blood circulation and leads to fluid accumulation. Injury or trauma to the foot or ankle, such as sprains or fractures, can also cause localized swelling. Medical conditions like heart disease or kidney problems can disrupt fluid balance, leading to generalized edema. Additionally, conditions like arthritis and venous insufficiency, where veins struggle to return blood to the heart, contribute to swelling. Certain medications may also cause fluid retention as a side effect. Identifying the root cause of foot and ankle swelling is essential for proper treatment and management. If your feet or ankles have become swollen, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can determine the cause and offer effective relief solutions.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact Stephen Boykins, DPM of SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

How to Manage an Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. The big toe is most commonly affected. Causes include improper nail trimming, wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, injury to the toenail, or genetic predisposition. Symptoms of an ingrown toenail include redness, swelling, pain, and tenderness along the side of the nail. If left untreated, the area can become infected, leading to pus, warmth, and increased pain. If you have toe pain and notice symptoms of an ingrown toenail, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can guide you toward effective treatment, which may include partial nail removal.

Ingrown toenails may initially present themselves as a minor discomfort, but they may progress into an infection in the skin without proper treatment. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Stephen Boykins, DPM of SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are caused when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh surrounding it. They often result in redness, swelling, pain, and in some cases, infection. This condition typically affects the big toe and may recur if it is not treated properly.

Causes

  • Improper toenail trimming
  • Genetics
  • Improper shoe fitting
  • Injury from pedicures or nail picking
  • Abnormal gait
  • Poor hygiene

You are more likely to develop an ingrown toenail if you are obese, have diabetes, arthritis, or have any fungal infection in your nails. Additionally, people who have foot or toe deformities are at a higher risk of developing an ingrown toenail.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of ingrown toenails are redness, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, there may be a yellowish drainage coming from the nail.

Treatment

Ignoring an ingrown toenail can have serious complications. Infections of the nail border can progress to a deeper soft-tissue infection, which can then turn into a bone infection. You should always speak with your podiatrist if you suspect you have an ingrown toenail, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
